Kandou Mini Backpack sewing pattern (with video)

This is a simple sewing pattern for a practical and stylish mini-sized backpack. The unisex design is great for customizing to create your own version, and instructions are given for adapting the backpack to fit a child (aged 6+). This makes it a great make for “mommy and me” addicts – why not make a matching set for all the family?!

The finished product is beautiful quality – fully lined with one internal pocket and bound seams – made using professional bagmaking techniques. Sizing info:
When you finish making your own Kandou Mini Backpack it will measure approximately 9¾” wide by 10¾” high by 4¾” deep (child size 4¼” deep). The adjustable strap length is 26″ to 33″ for an adult and 18″ to 24″ for a child.

Skill level: 
Lower Intermediate – Experience in basic bag making and sewing multiple layers of fabric is useful.

What is needed to make a Kandou Mini Backpack:-

  • ¾ of a yard of main fabric (42″ wide),
  • 2-yards of interfacing (20″ wide),
  • ¾ of a yard of low loft Fusible Fleece (22″ wide),
  • 1-yard of lining fabric (42″ wide),
  • * 2½ yards of Bias Binding tape (¾” wide). Instructions are given for making your own,
  • Two zippers (metal or nylon) – one 18″ head-to-head zipper*, and one 7″ regular zipper* (or 27″ zipper tape plus 3 zipper pulls),
  • 2-yards (adult size), 1½ yards (child size) of webbing tape (1″ wide),
  • Hardware – Two 1″ metal sliders, two 1″ rectangle rings, one magnetic ¾” snap fastener,
  • Leather Carry Handle (optional): 2/2.5mm (1/8″) leather strap 1″ by 9″, plus four rivets (6-8mm). You will also need the required setting tools,
  • Basic sewing supplies,
  • A sewing machine.
