This pdf sewing pattern is a modern take on the drawstring pouch inspired by the Komebukuro Japanese Rice Bag.

These bags were originally hand-sewn and used to carry rice offerings to temples. They make a great casual purse to sew, or project bag!

The designer’s instructions use a sewing machine but, can easily be adapted to hand sewing.

The bag opens and closes with a simple drawstring top with the drawstring then becoming the handles or shoulder strap for carrying the bag. Inside add a few simple slip pockets around the outside to keep things organized.

You can use your woven fabrics or recycled textiles scraps or orphan blocks. And personalize and embellish as you wish.

The pattern comes in sizes from small 7″ to large 10″.
