The Swim and Gym Bag FREE sewing pattern + video

This is the Swim and Gym Bag FREE pdf sewing pattern from the designer Mrs H.

This bag is a quick, simple sew, perfect for summer holidays when you don’t have a lot of time, and don’t want to be cutting and fusing and sewing all week!

The Swim & Gym Bag is perfectly sized for a trip to the beach, a workout in the gym or a dip in the pool. You’ll be able to fit everything you need inside, but it also folds up flat for easy storage when not in use.

The sewing pattern includes instructions for two large outer mesh pockets and one small interior zipped pouch which is perfect for small and easily lost objects such as money and keys.

The designer uses a drawstring both to close the bag and to act as straps. This bag doesn’t use any stabilisers, and the only hardware you need is eyelets and an optional zip. It works with all sorts of different fabrics and you might choose according to how you plan to use your bag. Mesh is great for the beach because sands just falls straight out!

The Swim & Gym Bag sewing pattern has been specially tested to maximise water resistance by using self-bound seams.

Features of the Swim & Gym Bag are as follows:-

  1. Now FREE (previously a paid pattern),
  2. Self-bound seams for added water resistance,
  3. Large mesh outer pockets,
  4. Drawstring/strap configuration,
  5. Interior zipper pouch,
  6. No stabiliser needed.

Skill level:
The designer has rated her sewing project as suitable for an advanced beginner / intermediate sewer. The construction is beginner level, but working with tricky fabrics makes this a slightly more challenging pattern. It’s written in UK English and has been thoroughly tested by a team of expert pattern testers.

Sizing info:
When you have finished making your very own Swim & Gym Bag it will measure approximately 12″ (30 cm) wide by 18″ (45 cm) tall by 7″ (18 cm) deep.

Recommended materials:
As far as what fabrics you should use the designer used faux leather, PUL and Mesh. She also used on a different bag 1000d Cordura and mesh. She also made a bag from faux leather, quilting cotton and linen. As far as rope is concerned the designer says to use the thickest that will comfortably fit through your eyelets. The rope endings are called copper couplings in the UK, and they are also available from hardware stores.

What needed to make a Swim & Gym Bag?

  • ½ yard of Faux leather or Cordura (at least 52″ wide),
  • Two packs of Annie’s Mesh or similar, or 1 yard at 52″ wide,
  • 1½ yards of ¼” elastic or fold over elastic,
  • Eight (or twelve) ⅝” or ¾” eyelets,
