With this pattern, she has provided two projects in one downloadable pattern. The Amara is a classic bag design. It comes in a Tote size that is perfect as a diaper bag or traveling bag, and in a Handbag size that is ideal for daily use.

Sewing pattern for the Amara Tote & Handbag

The Tote Bag size Amara bag has the following features:

  • An exterior zipper pocket,
  • Two interior slip pockets,
  • An interior zipper pocket,
  • Two interior side slip pockets,
  • Two pen slip pockets inside,
  • A zip-top closure to keep the bag’s contents secure.

While the Handbag size Amara bag has the following features:

  • An exterior zipper pocket,
  • Two interior slip pockets,
  • An interior zipper pocket,
  • A zip-top closure to keep the bag’s contents secure,
  • An adjustable shoulder strap.

The designer regards her two projects as suitable for an advanced beginner to an intermediate skilled sewer.

When you finish making the Amara Tote Bag it will measure approximately 13” wide by 14” high by 5” deep, while the Amara Handbag will measure approximately 10” wide by 11” high by 4” deep.

This pattern includes 48 pages of easy step-by-step instructions with color photos to help you through each step. The pattern also includes printable pattern pieces with seam allowances included.

Sewing pattern for the Amara Tote & Handbag

What you will need to make the Amara Tote:-

  • 1/2 yard of quilting weight exterior fabric
  • 1/2 yard of contrasting fabric, woven or vinyl
  • 1-1/2 yards of quilting weight lining fabric
  • 2-yards of fusible woven interfacing – 45” wide (Pellon SF-101 shape flex/wovenfuse)
  • 1-1/2 yards of sew-in foam interfacing – 20” wide (Pellon flex foam)
  • A 13” by 5” piece of fusible stiff stabilizer (Pellon Peltex 71f / Decovil heavy)
  • One 10” or longer #3 all-purpose zipper (interior zipper pocket)
  • One 14” or longer #4.5 handbag zipper (exterior front zipper pocket)
  • One 16” or longer #4.5 handbag zipper (main zipper closure)
  • One zipper end
  • Four 1” strap ends (optional)
  • Eight Rivets – size 9mm (optional)
  • Note – the strap end hardware and rivets are optional, you can also sew the Tote Straps in between Exterior and Lining just like Handbag Straps
  • Six bag feet (optional)
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • A sewing machine.

What you will need to make the Handbag size:-

  • 1/2 yard of quilting weight exterior fabric
  • 1/2 yard of contrasting fabric, woven or vinyl
  • 1-yard of quilting weight lining fabric
  • 1-1/2 yards fusible woven interfacing – 45” wide (Pellon SF-101 shape flex/wovenfuse)
  • 1-yard of sew-in foam interfacing – 20” wide (Pellon flex foam)
  • A 10” by 4” piece of fusible stiff stabilizer (Pellon Peltex 71f / Decovil heavy)
  • One 8” or longer #3 all-purpose zipper (interior zipper pocket)
  • One 12” or longer #4.5 handbag zipper (exterior front zipper pocket)

  • Two 3/4” D-rings (only if doing adjustable shoulder strap)
  • Two 3/4” swivel hooks (only if doing adjustable shoulder strap)
  • One 3/4″ slider (only if doing adjustable shoulder strap)
  • Six bag feet (optional)
  • Coordinating thread
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • A sewing machine.
