Mini Duffle Bag FREE pattern and video tutorial
Here’s a really cute Mini Duffle Bag sewing pattern with a FREE pattern and great video tutorial! It would be the ideal bag for your little one to take to school, or for an after school club or sporting activity.
This is a really pretty and practical Mini Duffle Bag with strong handles that go all around the bag to make them strong and secure if you need to carry a heavier load.
The designer, Ashley from Charmed By Ashley, always produces excellent sewing tutorials and videos. She points out with this one that this is not a full written tutorial so you won’t find a full step by step tutorial on her blog for this one. You must refer to the video tutorial below for full instruction.
We found the construction method interesting for this bag. You might expect to sew the outer and then the lining separately and then sew the lining into the bag. But no! You’ll have to check out the video to see how it works, but there is no drop in lining in this bag.
Materials needed:
Ashley points out that this bag is great to sew if you use more rigid fabric such as canvas, upholstery fabrics, and home decor fabrics such as intended for curtains. Heavier weight fabrics make for a stronger and more hardwearing bag. They are often a little easier to sew too, although take care to trim away access fabric in your seams so your machine won’t struggle with the thick layers.
If you want to use quilting cotton fabrics then you will need to add a medium weight to heavyweight interfacing to have a more rigid bag. We would suggest using an SF101 on the back of your quilting cotton and then using a good fusible fleece or one of the Pellon foam interfacings. This would give the bag more body while keeping it lightweight to use. Ashley used cotton for the hidden pocket and lining.
