How to make a Dishcloth Purse / Handbag – FREE pattern
Here’s the Dishcloth Purse / Handbag which is a free pattern and tutorial where the designer has made a handbag made from two flour sack dish towels. She has added some lovely leather handles, there’s an inset zipper and the bag is fully lined but there are no pockets, but of course, pockets could be added.
Making handbags is this designer’s favorite thing to sew, because as she says – they are fun and functional. She used the dishcloths as her outer fabric and a nice decorator weight fabric for the lining but you could instead use quilting cotton. This Dishcloth Purse is a really terrific design for a bag that can be used as an everyday casual tote bag.
The designer loves how this bag came out and we do too. She described it as a little more complicated than some of her other projects so she has categorized it as an intermediate sewing project. However, any confident beginner can make this bag if they follow the tutorial. This bag uses both hand and machine stitching to finish.
What you will need to make one of these bags:
- Two flour sack dishcloths, (or similar)
- 1/2 yard of lining fabric,
- One 12″ separating zipper,
- 1/2 yard of Pellon 808 interfacing,

- Basic sewing supplies
- A sewing machine.
