The Piped Pocket Tote is stylish, practical, super spacious and comes in two sizes!

The Piped Pocket Tote sewing pattern guides you through how to use piping to accentuate the features of your bag. Inside is a slip pocket, a zipped pocket and loads of space for your belongings. Outside there are two deep pockets on each side panel. Included in the pattern are instructions to create two tone handles, perfect for adding a little something extra using contrasting fabrics. The Piped Pocket Tote has a lovely large front panel that will be perfect for modifications such as applique or embroidery.

This is the perfect project for practising your piping skills! Sew the large version of The Piped Pocket Tote for work or for days out, and create the compact version for every day use!

Sizing info:

  • Small: 11 1/2" wide x 9 1/4" high x 4 1/2" deep (29cm x 23.5cm x 11.5cm).
  • Large: 13 3/4" wide x 11 1/2" high x 5 1/2" deep (35cm x 29cm x 14cm).

Skill level:
The Piped Pocket Tote is classified as an intermediate level bag sewing pattern.

What materials do I need?

Both Sizes (Hardware listed is all optional):

  • 6 x 1/2" (12mm) domed purse feet,
  • 2 x 1" (2.5cm) triangle rings,
  • 2 x 1" (2.5cm) Swivel hooks,
  • 1 x 1" (2.5cm) strap slider,
  • 4 x Diamond or Long John Strap Anchors.

Small size requirements:

  • 2 1/2 yards (2.3m) pre-made piping,
  • 1 x 10" (25.5cm) 3 zip (cut continuous zip 12" (30.5cm)),
  • 1 x 14" (35.5cm) 5 zip (cut continuous zip 16" (40.5cm)),
  • 10" x 4" (25.5cm x 10cm) bag base or thin cutting mat,
  • 1 1/8 yd (1m) exterior,
  • 2/3 yd (0.75m) lining,
  • 1 yd (0.9m) foam stabiliser 28" (72cm) wide, narrower will need more,
  • 2 1/4 yd (2m) medium weight fusible interfacing 1 yd (90cm) wide, narrower will need more.

Large size requirement:

  • 3 yards (2.75m) pre-made piping,
  • 1 x 10" (25.5cm) 3 zip (cut continuous zip 12" (30.5cm)),
  • 1 x 16" (40.5cm) 5 zip (cut continuous zip 18" (45.5cm)),
  • 12" x 4 1/2" (30.5cm x 11.5cm) bag base or thin cutting mat,
  • 1 3/4 yd (1.5m) exterior,
  • 1 1/8 yd (1m) lining,
  • 1 1/8yd (1m) foam stabiliser 28" (72cm) wide, narrower will need more,
  • 2 1/2 yd (2.25m) medium weight fusible interfacing 1 yd (90cm) wide, narrower will need more.

You will also need the following:

  1. Double sided basting tape,
  2. Zip foot & walking foot,
  3. Wonder Clips,
  4. Fray Check,
  5. Pressing Cloth,
  6. Pinking Shears,
  7. Duct Tape,
  8. Hera Marker.
