A weekender bag is just the right thing for an extended overnight stay somewhere. Something about a weekender just feels so right and when you can make one yourself which is strong and practical but beautiful at the same time, life seems to be pretty great.

This bag has everything that you need – it is roomy, it has pockets everywhere and sturdy handles. It is also a great place to show off an awesome hero print fabric because the sides are deliberately uncluttered without compromising on storage space. Happy dance time!

Sizing info:
20 ½” long by 11” high by 10” deep.

Skill level:
Confident beginner with some knowledge assumed.

Suggested Fabrics:
Quilting weight cotton, denim, canvas, furnishing fabrics, linen, needlecord, waxed cotton, oilcloth.

Materials needed:

  • ¾ of a yard of main canvas fabric or similar for the outer,
  • ¾ of a yard of coordinating solid canvas for the trims,
  • 1 ¾ yard of lining fabric,
  • Fat Quarter mesh fabric to coordinate with your main canvas,
  • 2 ¼ yards of foam interfacing. The designer uses Style-Vil by Vlieseline,
  • Fat eighth S320 fusible interfacing for the inner lined slip pockets,
  • One 20” heavy-duty metal zipper for the top. The designer used a double one but you don't have to,
  • One 6” metal zipper for the front zipper pocket,
  • One 4” zipper for the end pocket. There is nothing wrong with putting one of these on each end of the bag if you want an extra pocket,
  • Two 7” plastic zippers to coordinate for the lining,
  • 1 ¾ yard of 1 ½” wide webbing to coordinate with your main fabric for the handles,
  • 3” wide by ¾ yd. long leather or vegan leather to decorate the webbing handles,
  • 2 snap closures (ideally about the same color as the zipper teeth) for the end mesh pockets,
  • Tools to put the snaps on with,
  • Basic sewing supplies,
  • A sewing machine.

The pattern:
This is a measure and cut pattern which means that you don’t have any templates (pattern pieces) to print off and match up- Yay! You need a rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat, and you can cut the pattern pieces straight from the fabric. This is easier than it sounds because the pieces are all simple squares and rectangles. You can transfer the cutting measurements to paper to create your own paper template/pattern piece if you prefer to use them.
