This is a fully illustrated sewing tutorial, complete with full-scale professionally drawn templates, for a practical and stylish Hip Bag. This unique pattern design is suitable for a wide range of users, including festival goers, dog walkers, market stall vendors, archers - in short, anyone who likes to be out and about with their hands free and their valuables secure!

This is a really practical, on-trend design, with lots of great features that make it the perfect gift for family and friends, male and female alike. The Festival Hip Bag has the folowing special features:-

  3. Practical secure zipper pockets on the front and on the back – fits phone, passport, or other valuables.
  4. Large cargo pocket with flap - perfect for wallet and sunglasses.
  5. Small Slip pocket with snap fastener tab - great for cards, keys, or doggy bags!
  6. Small zipper pocket - perfect for loose change.
  7. Adjustable webbing strap (instructions are given for 3 sizes, and for making a fabric strap if you prefer).
  8. Can be worn two ways - either on the hip, or as a Sling across the upper body.

Designed to give a beautiful quality finished product. All the five pockets are fully lined. No seam binding involved, and NO hand finishing. (The cargo pocket needs to be basted in place by hand unless you're a very experienced sewer).

Skill Level:
Advanced Intermediate. Experience of bag making techniques and sewing multiple layers of fabric is a must for this pattern. You'll also need to have a 'Can Do' attitude and a willingness to learn new techniques such as sewing 3-D pockets if you haven't done it before!

Sizing info:
18½" wide across the top by 10¼" long at the center.
The pocket dimensions are as follows: Cargo Pocket - 6½" by 6¾" by 1". Main Zipper Pockets - 7" by 7" (Front and Back). Front slip pocket (for cards) - 3½" by 2¾". Small zipper pocket (for coins) - 5" by 2½".
The waist circumference approx. (adjustable) - Small 28" to 42". Medium 34" to 46". Large 38" to 50".

Recommends fabrics:
-> Exterior: any medium-weight woven fabric (8-10oz): cotton canvas or cotton twill are ideal. Soft vinyl, light waxed or waterproof canvas can also be used without interfacing. Avoid stiff or heavy fabrics. Quilting cotton can be used in conjunction with fusible woven interfacing (apply a double layer) and fusible interlining as specified below.
-> Pocket Linings: - any light-weight woven fabric - quilting cotton or cotton poplin.
-> Interfacing – Pellon Shapeflex SF101 or Vilene G700.
-> Interlining – if your fabric is soft or lightweight, add a layer of low-loft fusible fleece to the Back panel - Pellon 987F or Vilene H630 will give your bag substance and make it more durable.

Materials and hardward required:

  • Exterior Fabric - (whole bag) - ¾ yard.
  • For contrast fabric version (as in photos) - ½ yard for the main colour, plus one FQ for the contrast.
  • Lining Fabric (44" wide) ½ yard.
  • Fusible woven Interfacing Vilene G700 (36" wide) ¾ yard to include fabric strap. OR Pellon Shapeflex SF101 (20" wide) 1 ¼ yards (1 ¾ yards to include fabric strap).
  • For extra body add interlining - Fusible Fleece - Pellon 987F (20" wide) ½ yard or Vilene H630 (36" wide) ½ yard.
  • Zippers (1" wide) two 7" and one 5".
  • Webbing tape - 1" wide (2mm thickness is best) – for size small 27"/ size medium 33" / size large 39". Small Scraps of heavy fusible interfacing are also required.
  • One D ring, one swivel clip, one strap slider - all size 1".
  • Two snap fasteners for pockets – One ½" for the Cargo Pocket, one ⅜" for the slip pocket (or two ½" will do). Small Scraps of heavy fusible interfacing are also required.
  • Options for Slip (Card) Pocket:- For a leather fastener tab instead of fabric - one small scrap of leather 4" by 4". For leather binding to pocket edge instead of fabric - one small scrap of thin leather or vinyl 7" by ½".

Instructions are written in English only, with measurements given in inches. The pattern comprises a very detailed step-by-step photo tutorial with lots of color photos throughout illustrating every step of the process from start to finish. It also includes full-scale computer drawn templates with seam allowances included for you to cut out and assemble yourself.
